One of the biggest mistakes I see in painting jobs around Armidale is poor preparation.
Most paint failures don’t happen because of bad paint—they happen because the surface wasn’t prepared properly.
I regularly inspect repaints where previous work has failed due to skipped prep. Common issues include peeling paint, poor sanding, stains bleeding through, mould painted over, and water-based paint applied over old oil-based surfaces without the correct primer.
A common example is older trims, doors and skirting. Many older homes still have oil-based enamel. If water-based paint is applied straight over it without proper sanding and priming, it often scratches, peels or lifts.
What should have been a simple repaint can quickly become a full strip-back and repaint, costing far more.
Proper prep should include cleaning, sanding, filling, caulking and priming where required.
A good painter also knows when not to paint. Rotten timber, moisture damage or plaster issues should be fixed first.
